Protection Against Vehicle Tracking
A new bill is geared towards protecting your privacy by adding measures to connected vehicle services under Division 12 of the Vehicle Code (Chapter 6, Section 28200). Beginning January 1, 2028, cars will notify drivers if anyone outside the vehicle is using the car’s connected services to track their location. By July 2025, manufacturers must ensure that drivers can easily disconnect unwanted tracking, and then by 2026, even older vehicles with location tracking capabilities will be covered. Without needing an app or password, drivers will have a simple button inside the vehicle to turn off location tracking. This law is all about preventing your car from becoming a tool for surveillance and ensuring that you have control over your privacy.
