Seat Belts Save

Every November 14, National Seat Belt Day reminds drivers of something we already know but often forget in the rush of daily life: buckling up is still the single most effective way to protect yourself on the road. Even with all the modern safety technology built into today’s cars—lane-keep assist, airbags, blind-spot warning systems—the seat belt remains the foundation of crash protection. As drivers, it’s easy to assume that familiar routes or short trips don’t require the same level of attention to safety, but statistics continue to show that many serious crashes happen close to home. That simple click before you shift into drive is one of the most important decisions you’ll make all day.

From a driver’s point of view, wearing a seat belt is about more than avoiding a ticket. It’s about being prepared for the unexpected. A sudden stop, a distracted driver drifting into your lane, a slippery patch of pavement—none of these situations give you time to react or brace yourself. A seat belt keeps you in the safest position behind the wheel and prevents you from becoming a secondary projectile inside the vehicle. Airbags are designed to work with seat belts, not replace them. Without a seat belt, an airbag can actually cause more harm because you won’t be in the proper position at the moment it deploys.

National Seat Belt Day exists because even with decades of awareness campaigns, too many drivers still take the risk. In many fatal crashes, victims simply weren’t buckled. The three-point seat belt has been around since 1959 because it works consistently, no matter what you drive or how experienced you are. As instructors and safety advocates, we hear the same excuses from drivers: “It’s uncomfortable,” “I’m just going around the corner,” “I forget sometimes,” or “The belt locks up too easily.” But the truth is that none of these reasons outweigh the reality of what can happen in a crash at only 25 mph.

As fellow drivers, we know that habits matter. The best way to protect yourself is to make buckling up automatic. Before you adjust your mirrors or pair your phone to Bluetooth, click the belt into place. If you drive with kids, passengers, or rideshare customers, set the expectation that everyone buckles up before the car moves. Model the behavior every time, no matter how quick the trip. National Seat Belt Day isn’t just a reminder—it’s a chance to recommit to a daily habit that saves thousands of lives every year.

At Finish Today Traffic School, we encourage every student to take this observance seriously. A seat belt won’t prevent every injury, but it dramatically increases your chance of walking away from a crash. November 14 is the perfect day to pause and recognize how something so simple continues to make such a big difference.
